Opening Soon At A Location Near You While the staff and students took a mid-year break over the holiday season workers continued their six-day schedule on the new science complex in anticipation of a completion date that will permit classes to be scheduled for the fall semester of 2006. Heavy rains during the early days of the year resulted in some delays and concerns, but with extra effort the exterior walls are nearly completely finished along with the roof, which will allow work on the interior walls to commence. Soon To Be A Landscaped Plaza Facing the old college union, this area will combine with the existing open area to create a magnificent space that will be crossed by the curving walkway that will eventually transverse the campus and link the Student Center on the corner of Moorpark and Leigh to the Technology Center at Bascom and Moorpark. The landscaping in this area will be extensive, and among other features it will include a dry streambed that will be utilized as a classroom for studies in ecology. |
This magnificent curved staircase will descend to a tiled landing that will depict a DNA coil in a very dramatic fashion as seen below.
Another design feature will be exterior student walkways similar to the GE complex that will maximize the utilization of interior spaces. The picture below shows the north side of the second floor looking towards the Technology Center.

Countdown To Demolition A look from the second floor of the new building toward the old Science Buildings is a view that will be changed radically in a year. During the coming fall semester both of these half-century old buildings will be demolished, and the curved walkway currently extending a short distance from the Technology Center will be extended and continued across the footprint where these two buildings currently stand. In this picture you can visualize the location of this path, which will extend from the lower right hand corner in a gentle curve across this picture to disappear in the distance roughly along the line of the existing east Science Building. When this demolition is finished the old 1-2-300 wings will continue to stand to the south. Their demolition will take place after the new Applied Science complex is completed. At roughly the same time that the old Science Buildings are demolished in the fall of 2006 the west wings only of the 1-2-300 buildings will be demolished to accommodate the footprint for the new Applied Science complex. While that work is being completed the old College Union will be remodeled so that both Cosmetology and Reprographics will be able to move in. A the same time a new structure to house the college’s maintenance and operations functions will be constructed. All of this work will be completed within the next 24 to 36 months. What an exciting time to be a member of the City College family! |
