How
to Choose a Major
Many students are undeclared and can continue
on the transfer track without declaring a major. However, since most university
requirements will depend on your major, it is advantageous to decide your major
early to avoid taking inappropriate courses.
If you are undecided about choosing a major, schedule
an appointment with your counselor to discuss the steps in choosing a major.
Some important steps in choosing a major:
- Know yourself. Identify your interests, values, life experience
and abilities.
- Take one of the Guidance classes at SJCC, which focuses on self-assessment,
career development and/or college success.
- Take the Discover career assessment available in the Transfer Center.
- Research career fields.
- Use the Eureka computer program in the Transfer Center to research information
on various occupations, such as average salaries, educational preparation
and work environment.
- Check out the career-related Resources
available in the Transfer Center.
- Interview someone who is working in the field that interests you.
- Volunteer or do an internship in the career field that interests you.
- Find out how careers link with college majors.
- Use the Eureka computer program in the Transfer Center to research
what major options are available for the career that interests you.
