How to Choose a Major

Many students are “undeclared” and can continue on the transfer track without declaring a major.  However, since most university requirements will depend on your major, it is advantageous to decide your major early to avoid taking inappropriate courses.

If you are undecided about choosing a major, schedule an appointment with your counselor to discuss the steps in choosing a major.

Some important steps in choosing a major:

  1. Know yourself.  Identify your interests, values, life experience and abilities.
    • Take one of the Guidance classes at SJCC, which focuses on self-assessment, career development and/or college success.
    • Take the Discover career assessment available in the Transfer Center.

  2. Research career fields.
    • Use the Eureka computer program in the Transfer Center to research information on various occupations, such as average salaries, educational preparation and work environment.
    • Check out the career-related Resources available in the Transfer Center.
    • Interview someone who is working in the field that interests you.
    • Volunteer or do an internship in the career field that interests you.

  3. Find out how careers link with college majors.
    • Use the Eureka computer program in the Transfer Center to research what major options are available for the career that interests you.
    • Check out the career-related Resources available in the Transfer Center.
