BECOME A DENTAL ASSISTANT!

San José City College enjoys the reputation of offering the finest education and training for dental assistants in Silicon Valley. The fully licensed experienced professionals of the teaching staff provide students with excellent skills training and academic preparation.


The Dental Assisting facility includes a clinic with ten state-of-the-art dental operatories and five x-ray operatories where traditional and digital x-ray techniques are taught. Classes begin every semester with two instructors assigned to every thirty-five students. The recommendations for entering students include a CPR Certificate, Reading and Writing Level 2, the Hepatitis B Vaccination and TB test.

New Student Information

The Dental Assisting Program is Not a Dental Hygiene Program.

SJCC’s Dental Assisting students are taught to perform dental assisting skills with expanded functions, are trained and licensed in taking dental x-rays, certified in coronal polishing and pit and fissure sealants. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the California State Board examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (R.D.A.). In addition, students are eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board’s Certified Dental Assistant exam for certification to become a Certified Dental Assistant (C.D.A.). SJCC also offers and AS in Dental Assisting.

 

Students may enter the program in either the Fall OR Spring semester by enrolling in ALL six of these courses: DENT 151, 152, 153,154, 155 and 156. It is recommended that students planning to enter the program take the placement test as early as possible to determine his/her level. Those needing to improve their skills may do so in courses offered by the college prior to admissions to the program. (See a counselor for details).

 

The Dental Assisting Program is FULL-TIME Monday through Thursday 8:30-2:30 and Friday 8:30-5:00. It is recommended students practice after school each day. Students must register in ALL six courses. There is no partial enrollment. Counselors will assist with override codes to register for ALL six courses.

Costs of uniforms, books, safety items, tuition, and miscellaneous supplies are estimated at $1,500-$2,000 for the 11 month program. Costs are spread out over the 11 months. Approximately $800 is needed at the start of the program. It is thoroughly discussed at the mandatory Dental Assisting Orientation (See our Schedule of Classes for more information)​
