David Flynn was hired in 2007. He brings an impressive resume and a wealth of knowledge to San Jose City College. He started coaching at Alhambra High School in 1997 as an Assistant Coach for Tim Bruder in Cross Country/Track and Field. While there, he enjoyed having athletes compete in League Championships, North Coast Championships, and multiple medalists at the California State level. During his time at Alhambra the Women's 4 X 800 and Distance Medley team qualified to run in the Penn Relays. Coach Flynn was recruited by Diablo Valley College in 2002 as Assistant Cross Country and Associate Track and Field Coach. While coaching at DVC, the programs grew to have Northern California Champions and record holders and State medalists. In 2005 Coach Flynn moved to De Anza College to assist Coach Curtis Smith for a year then assumed the role of Head Coach for both Cross Country and Track and Field. During his first year at De Anza, the Women's Cross Country team won the Northern California Championships. In the years that followed he was able to have continued success as the athletes competed in the Northern California Championships and State Championships. Now at San Jose City College Coach Flynn has worked with many athletes in Cross Country and Track and Field who have excelled through Northern California Championships and medaled at the State Championships. In 2010, he coached Aaron Victorian, the Men's Decathlon State Champion. On the Women's side he has had continued success with Diamara Planell Cruz who won the Women's Pole Vault in both 2012 and 2013. Planell Cruz not only won the State Meet, but set the State Record both times she competed in the State Championships.
Flynn is not only an accomplished Coach but he is also an accomplished runner in his own right. He was a CIF State 1600 meter participant for Alhambra High School. As a student athlete at Diablo Valley College he was a member of two Golden Gate Conference Championship teams in both Cross Country and Track and Field. In 1993 he was a member of the NorCal Championship Cross Country team that went on to place 5th at the State Meet. During the Track and Field season of 1994 he brought accolades to his team and himself as the Golden Gate Conference Champion in the 1500 meter and 800 meter events, NorCal 1500 Champion and placed 6th in the State Championships in the 1500 meter. After DVC he went on to compete at San Francisco State University and the NCAA Division II level.
A native of the Bay Area, born in Walnut Creek and raised in Martinez, Coach Flynn graduated from Alhambra High School in 1992. He completed his AA Degree at Diablo Valley College then transferred to San Francisco State University. Eventually he transferred to California State University, Hayward where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology. Coach Flynn has worked on his Masters Degree at Saint Mary's College of Moraga in California. Other accomplishments include his USA Track and Field Level I and Level II Coaching Certifications.
