After You're Admitted


We are ready to help you on your path to success.

Once you’ve been admitted to SJCC, an admission packet will be sent to you within two weeks. When you receive your admission packet, you should pay a SEVIS fee and visa fee and schedule an interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for your F-1 visa as early as possible but no earlier than 90 days prior to the program date listed on your I-20. Prepare for your interview. You must demonstrate your intention to return to your home country after you complete your studies in the United States. If your visa application is approved, you will receive a F-1 visa in your passport. If you have been approved for a U.S. F-1 visa, please notify us by e-mailing us at by July 31, 2018.

Check-In and Arrival

You are allowed to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date listed on your I-20. Please schedule your flight to arrive prior to the date of the group orientation.

When you arrive, please check in to the International Program Office. We are located on the second floor of the Student Center, Room SC216L. You will need to bring the following to check in: 

    • Passport
    • Visa
    • I-20


San Jose City College, similar to most community colleges, does not offer on-campus housing. San Jose City College works with the International Student Placements (ISP),, to provide students the opportunity to live with host families. We strongly recommend you consider staying with a host family when you first arrive. ISP homestay also provides airport pickup service for students staying with host families.

There are many hotels in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area.  Students just arriving to the U.S. may wish to stay at a hotel for a few days until they find longer-term accommodations. A list of hotels in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area may be found on websites such as,,, or  


Health Insurance and Health Clearance

Medical visits and emergencies can be very costly in the United States.  San Jose City College requires all international students to purchase and subscribe to the health insurance plan selected by the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District.  San Jose City College does not accept any other U.S. or foreign-based insurance plans.  Only students who meet certain eligibility criteria may request a waiver by completing a health insurance waiver form and providing required proof by the first day of each semester.   

Upon arrival, students will be required to demonstrate proof of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunizations and tuberculosis (TB) test. Students can obtain clearance by submitting proof or scheduling an appointment with SJCC’s Health Center for these services. At this time, there is no fee for the TB test. Health clearance forms must be submitted within three weeks of the start of the semester.

A wide range of services and programs are available to help you succeed. From the time you apply to the time you graduate, ongoing personal support is available. Services include academic counseling, immigration advising, learning resources, language support, tutorial services, cutting-edge computer labs, and much more!
