After You're Admitted
Once you’ve been admitted to SJCC, an admission packet will be sent to you within two weeks. When you receive your admission packet, you should pay a SEVIS fee and visa fee and schedule an interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for your F-1 visa as early as possible but no earlier than 90 days prior to the program date listed on your I-20. Prepare for your interview. You must demonstrate your intention to return to your home country after you complete your studies in the United States. If your visa application is approved, you will receive a F-1 visa in your passport. You are now prepared to attend San Jose City College!
Your success is our priority. Orientation is the first step to success at San Jose City College. Your admission packet will include a list of your next steps to confirm your admission at San Jose City College. You will be allowed to register for some classes prior to arrival, but upon arrival, you will be required to take a placement test and meet with a counselor to review and schedule additional classes. A one-day group orientation will be scheduled about two weeks before the semester starts. More information will be listed in your admission packet.
You are allowed to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date listed on your I-20. Please schedule your flight to arrive prior to the date of the group orientation. When you arrive, please check in to the International Program Office. We are located on the second floor of the Student Center, Room SC216L. You will need to bring the following to check in:
San Jose City College, similar to most community colleges, does not offer on-campus housing. We recognize the importance of feeling at home in America. San Jose City College works with the International Student Placements (ISP), www.isphomestays.com, to provide students the opportunity to live with host families. We strongly recommend you consider staying with a host family when you first arrive. ISP homestay also provides airport pickup service for students staying with host families.
Students may also choose to find other housing options on the following websites:
There are many
hotels in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area. Students just arriving to the
U.S. may wish to stay at a hotel for a few days until they find longer-term
accommodations. A list of hotels in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area may be
found on websites such as www.hotels.com, www.orbitz.com, www.expedia.com, or www.travelocity.com.
Medical care in the United States can be very costly so having insurance will help offset the cost of medical treatment. All international students are required to have a health insurance plan. The International Student Program will provide you with a list of health insurance providers that offers a health insurance policy for San Jose City College students in your admission packet.
Starting in the Fall 2014 semester, international students will be required to purchase a group insurance plan offered through San Jose City College. This allows us to obtain excellent coverage for you at a better value. More information will be provided shortly.
Upon arrival, students will be required to demonstrate proof of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunizations and tuberculosis (TB) test. Students can obtain clearance by submitting proof or scheduling an appointmentwith SJCC’s Health Center for these free services. Health clearance forms must be submitted within three weeks of the start of the semester.
