Library Services

Library Cards

Your SJCC I.D. Card, issued at the Information Counter in the Student Center, serves as your library card. You are responsible for the return of all library materials borrowed with your card. Fines are charged for overdue items, and payment is required for lost or damaged materials.

Loan Periods

Loan periods for library materials are as follows:

Books and Compact Discs 3 weeks
Magazines 1 week
Video cassettes 1 week
DVD's 1 week
Reserve materials   (variable)    1 hour – 3 weeks

Reference materials, newspapers, microforms, many reserve items, and the most recent issues of magazines are for library use only.

Renewals

Borrowed items may be renewed twice, unless someone else has requested them. For renewals,

Fines for Overdue Items:

General Items $ 0.25 per day, each item
Study Rooms $ 1.50 per hour or partial hour
Computers $ 0.50 per hour or partial hour
Reserve Items $ 1.50 per hour or partial hour
Laptop Computers    $ 5.00 per hour or partial hour

  • Fines for overdue reserve materials (textbooks, DVDs and videos only) are $1.50/hr, per item for each hour the library is open. Maximum fines can equal the cost of the material, plus a non-refundable $25.00 processing fee.
  • One- and two-hour reserve material not returned to the Circulation Counter by closing time on the day the item is due will be subject to a $5.00 overnight fine and $5.00 for each additional day the library is closed (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). This fine is in addition to the $1.50/hour overdue fine charged when the library is open.

Library Materials

Consult the Library Catalog to find out what materials the Library contains. Materials are available in the following formats:

Magazines, Journals, and Newspapers

Magazines, journals, and newspapers are available in the Reference Area. To find out which periodicals the Library has, see the SJCC Library Periodicals List, or consult the Library Catalog.
Many more articles are accessible through electronic Databases, most of which are available both on campus and off.

Additional Library Resources

Computers.  Computers for word processing, internet and database searching are located in the reference area and can be reserved for two hours at a time at the Circulation Counter.  A student I.D. card is required to check out a computer.

Disabled Access.  The library provides an adjustable table, an ADA-approved computer workstation, plus a screen reader program and a print-enlarger for the visually-impaired.

Go Print.  This is a cash- or card-operated printer attached to the library computers. A color printer is also available through the Go Print system. 

Group Study Rooms.  Ten group study rooms are available on the third floor.  They can be reserved at the Circulation Counter by groups of two or more people, for a two-hour time period.  Laptop computers are available for use in the Group Study Rooms.

Internet Access.  In addition to the library’s computers, the library is a Wireless Hot Spot.  Data ports are also available at many tables and carrels throughout the building.

Laptop Computers.  The library is able to provide laptop computers through a generous donation from the Associated Students (AS).  They are available for use in the Group Study Rooms for a two-hour check-out period.  Students must sign the Laptop Computer Loan Agreement before checking out a computer.

Library Handouts.  The library publishes online handouts to assist students in locating and using library resources. 

Library Databases.   Databases containing a wide variety of research materials are available for on- and off-campus use.  Students and staff must log-in with their college I.D. number for off-campus access.

Media Equipment.  The library houses equipment for listening to compact discs and equipment for viewing videos and DVDs.

Microfilm Reader.  There is a machine for reading and copying microfilm in the reference area.  The price for copies is posted.

Interlibrary Loan.  Items not owned by either the SJCC or EVC library may be loaned from other libraries.  Information is available at the Reference Desk.

Photocopy Machines.  Two cash-operated photocopiers are located at the east end of the reference area.  The price for copies is posted.

Reference Services
The reference counter is located to the right of the front doors as you enter the library.   If you need help locating information or using library resources, be sure to ask the reference librarian for assistance.
Reserve Collection.  The reserve collection, located at the Circulation Counter, contains textbooks provided by instructors, as well as other library materials.  Loan periods for reserve items are set by the instructors and may vary.

The San Jose City College Library supports the programs of the College and the learning needs of a diverse student population by providing a rich variety of learning resources and instruction in the principles of information competency.  

Student Learning Outcome #1  
Students will acquire information competency/literacy skills, which include the ability to access, retrieve, analyze, evaluate and apply, and document sources.

The librarians will select, acquire, and maintain a current collection of print, audio-visual, and electronic resources to support, augment and supplement the college curriculum, course assignments, student success and lifelong learning.

The librarians will provide access to and assistance with information resources for students, faculty, staff, and community; they will promote information resources in all appropriate forms.
