Assessment FAQs

I want to attend San Jose City College. What should I do first?

You must file an Application for Admission with the Office of Admissions and Records OR online http://cccapply.org/ . After you have received your San Jose City College student ID number, call the Assessment Center to schedule an appointment.

Why should I prepare for my Assessment?

Why waste time taking classes you do not need? Your Assessment will help to determine what level of classes you will place into as a beginning student. If you are planning to transfer to a 4 year University, a higher score will mean you can begin taking transferable classes sooner. Also, if you start taking classes based on your scores, you will not be eligible to retake the Compass assessment. If you have not started taking classes, you will need to wait 12 months from your assessment date to re-take.

Does the Assessment Center have any materials to help me prepare for the placement test?

Yes, please visit our English, Math and/or ESL section under the Assessment Menu.

What happens if I fail my assessment?

Your assessment is not Pass or Fail exam. The assessment examines your present competency level in English, Math and/or ESL.

Will I need to pay for Assessment?

There are no fees for taking your Assessment. A San Jose City College Student ID number and a photo ID are required.

How do I schedule an appointment?

The testing is done at the Assessment Center by appointment only. Plan ahead and book your appointment early. The closer it gets to the beginning of the Semester, the less availability we have for appointments.
You may schedule an appointment by calling: (408) 288-3170. Please allow two hours to complete the COMPASS assessment. You may arrive up to 15 minutes early for check-in. Late Arrivals will not be admitted. If you are a student whose native language is not English, you are encouraged to take the ESL (English as a Second Language) Assessment.

Should I take the ESL Assessment?

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. The Assessment Center offers an assessment for students whose first language is not English. Testing is done at the Assessment Center by appointment only. Call (408) 288-3170 to schedule an appointment for your ESL Assessment. Dictionaries are not allowed during the assessment. Soon after the test, students will meet individually with a Counselor to discuss their assessment results during counseling drop in hours or by scheduling a Counseling appointment.

Where can I park?

Parking is available in the Parking Structure located at the corner of Moorpark and Leigh Avenue (off HW 280). It will cost $2.00 for a daily parking permit.

May I retake my Assessment?

Yes, but only within these timelines:
English test: after 12 months
Math test: after 12 months
ESL test: after 6 months
You may not retake the Compass assessment if you have already begun the sequence of English or Math courses you placed into during your first assessment. The Compass assessment is for initial placement only. Once you have started taking your classes you may not use the Compass Assessment to skip levels.

How can I get copies of my Assessment scores?

If you are taking the English as a first language or Math assessment, you will receive a print out of your scores immediately upon completing your Assessment. If you are taking the ESL assessment, you will receive a copy of your scores from a Counselor a few days after completing your assessment. This is the only print out of your scores you will receive. We recommend you keep this copy for your files. If you need to print another copy of your scores, log into your MyWeb account and look for the section labeled "testing scores".

Does the Assessment Center offer accommodations for students with disabilities?

Yes. To arrange for disability-related accommodation please contact the DSP/S office at: (408) 288-3746 and ask to speak with a Counselor.

Are High School students required to take the English and Math assessment?

Yes, all high school students interested in attending classes through San Jose City College are required to take both the English and Math assessment. Whether the class you are interested in is being offered at San Jose City College or on-site at your high school, you will be required to complete our assessment and meet with a San Jose City College Counselor for course placement.
