1. Players First
San Jose City College Baseball is built on the concept that the player is the center of our program. His needs and achievement are the paramount to our success as a program. The players are treated with respect and like men, and they are guaranteed to have a great experience playing baseball at SJCC.
2. Family
We are a close-knit group at SJCC. We enjoy each other’s company and would do anything for each other. This unity and trust is built through the commitment of the program to fostering positive chemistry. The players do everything together. The coaching staff stands side by side with the players on all matters, not in front of them. We act as one in everything that we do.
3. Skill Development
All players will receive outstanding coaching and instruction that will center on the development of their baseball skills. Players will be put into situations and positions that they can achieve in. Practices will focus on each individual’s areas of improvement and each player will get better playing at SJCC. Our job is to prepare them to not only play at the next level, but to thrive at the upper levels of the game.
4. Academics
There are two things that need to be done to play at the 4-year collegiate level: Be a great baseball player and be a sound student. One does not work without the other. Our players will receive individual attention on all academic matters, including: class selection, progress checks, grades, and transfer requirements. All of our players take the proper classes to be on track to graduate college in four years, because that is the ultimate goal for every player in our program.
5. Commitment
We ask all of our players to commit to our philosophy on excelling in the classroom and on the field. It is a great commitment to be a student-athlete and thrive at it, but we have extraordinary young men in our program and we expect greatness from them. The players at SJCC commit to the work that is needed to excel athletically and academically.
6. Expectations
We have great expectations for our players, and in turn, they have great expectation for their coaches. The players are expected to be on-time, work hard on their skill development, attend class, and receive high academic marks. The coaches are expected to instruct at a high level, monitor academic performance, and place all players at the next level. It is only with these high expectations that we receive the desired results.
7. Respect
Each and every person that is involved in our program is treated with the ultimate respect. They are all a huge part of the continual success of our program. Players are treated like the honorable young men that they are, they are never berated or put down. Because of this treatment, players hold their coaches in high regard and treat them with great respect. Our program is extremely respected in the entire baseball community, and it is because we do things the right way here.
8. Honor
Every one of us that puts on the Jaguar uniform understands the honor that is associated with it. Not only are we honoring the game of baseball, we are honoring San Jose City College Baseball. This sense of pride is evident in every one of our players and this feeling of dignity carries over into the other areas of their life. They are proud to be a Jaguar, not only during their playing career here, but for the rest of their lives. They understand what it takes to be a Jag and this feeling of honor drives them.
9. Believe
This word encompasses everything we do in this program. Our program is built on the belief that each player should have a memorable experience while at SJCC. The players have the ultimate belief in each other and their coaches. They all go through this experience together and they understand that these experiences shape their lives. They believe in the way of the Jaguars, and work with everything they have to live up to the expectations that come with that name on the jersey.
