Season Outlook
The 2009 San Jose City College Jaguars return a solid group of sophomores mixed in with an exciting group of freshman, which is proving to be one of the most talented teams that SJCC has seen in years. The close-knit group finished one of the most successful Fall seasons in recent memory and is ready to take the SJCC baseball program to new heights. The bar is set high for this squad, with a Golden Gate Conference championship and a run at the state title in the Jaguars sights.
Catchers – The Jaguars welcome a young group of catchers to the fold for the 2009 season. Brett Itatani and Gino Valletta will split the starting duties, and both have unique talents that make them a formidable duo. Both are masters of catching techniques, but their biggest impact will be felt as essential members of the Jaguar offensive lineup.
Infielders – SJCC returns their All Northern California second baseman Greg Fujii to a youthful, but very talented infield core. Fujii led the 2008 Jaguars in most offensive categories and is the leader of the star-studded group SJCC will field this year. Talented Freshman Zach Canez will man shortstop for the Jags with occasional relief from returner AJ Almarez. Freshman Danny Nelson will see time at 2B, SS, and CF. Newcomer Justin Lagman will hold down third base with his strong arm and acrobatic plays. Returner Travis Molina and transfer Josiah Rodriguez will split duties at first base. Both are valuable defensive players and will be impact bats in the middle of the Jaguar lineup.
Outfielders – A veteran group will roam the outfield for SJCC in the 2009 season. Corner outfielders Kyle Kiddy and Daniel Garo provide stable defense and pop in the Jaguar lineup. Sophomore Andrew Castaneda’s blazing speed will see plenty of time at CF and LF. Freshmen Danny Nelson and Kenny Pope will provide supreme athleticism for the Jags in the outfield. Freshman transfer Curtis Van Waardenberg will be a force in the Jaguar lineup.
Pitchers – A young, but highly talented pitching staff will lead the 2009 Jaguar squad. UC Santa Barbara bound Nick Loredo will be the ace of the staff and is the leader of the pitchers. Freshman phenoms Matt Burns and Don Medlinger will round out the high-powered starting rotation. Newcomers Jake Zamora, Tyler Tulowitzki, and side-winder Harold Zosel will be valuable relievers. Flame throwing Steve Amaral will serve as the Jaguar closer and anchor in the bullpen. Starting shortstop Zach Canez will also pitch some valuable innings for SJCC.
The newly formed Golden Gate Conference will prove to be one of the most competitive conferences in the state. The Jaguars have a strong belief in their ability to not only to win the GGC, but to also make a run at the state title in Fresno.
