SJCC Coach Percy Carr Wins Record 704th Basketball Game
San José City College is proud to congratulate Jaguar Basketball Coach Percy Carr who, by winning his 704th game last night, became the winningest coach in California community college history. Percy and the San José City Jaguars set the record in an 81-73 win over the visiting Gavilan Rams.
San José City College congratulates Coach Carr for his on-court achievements and his off-court ones. Coach Carr's record for wins is notable, but his dedication to our students and our college is equally outstanding. Coach Carr is the architect of the Creative Athlete Retention Response (CARR) program offered at San Jose City College which offers athletic/academic advising to San Jose City College's athletes. The program is the only one of its kind for athletes involved in sports at community colleges in California. Coach Carr has also been a remarkable role-model for his students and the community.
San José City College has been extremely lucky to have Coach Carr as a basketball coach, mentor, and symbol and at this moment of his personal triumph we are proud to be able to offer him congratulations for the entire San José City College Commmunity!
A short synopsis of the game is provided below and links to press coverage of this event will be forthcoming from the marketing office.
THE GAME THAT WON IT:
Carr has coached at San José City College for 31 years, and before the game he noted that time seemed to be slowing down as he approached the record. "I just want to finish this tonight," said Coach Carr as he lead his team out to the court. The Jaguars jumped out to an 11 point lead to start the game, a lead they relinquished in the first quarter during a six-minute stretch without a score. A timeout calmed the team and they entered half-time with a six point lead. The Jaguars extended this lead by one point in the second half, and when the game went final the bleachers erupted in cheers.
City College's leading scorer was Jerry Cotton with 17 points, Will Mace had 16 points, and Dave Smith followed with 15. But the night belonged to Coach Carr who was doused at the game's conclusion and left the court to celebrate in the locker room with his team.
Coach Carr's achievement will be recognized at a celebratory luncheon in March. For now the coach plans to return to his regular coaching routine and concentrate on getting into the regional playoffs in March.
