This overview of  federal and state statutes governing collective bargaining and labor relations.   Law  Professor Koenig will help  you understand the laws impacting workers  such as the Family Medical Leave Act, Workers Compensation, discrimination and civil rights laws, stewards rights,the National Labor Relations Act and others. Leadership development in interpersonal relationships with union and community groups and their social contributions . Learn techniques for personal development of time management skills, media skills and problem solving efforts by working with non-government organizations and labor unions. LABOR 034 - IMMIGRANT LEADERSHIP TRAINING 3 Units
This class focuses on training emerging immigrant leaders and supporters. This unique classroom experience brings forward the vision and experiences from the diversity of immigrants living in Santa Clara County. Participants share the arrival challenges faced and identify  the  resources to help their communities. Participants will analyze current barriers for immigrant civic participation,  review the historic context of immigration and immigration laws.and create a strategy for team building and community organizing.. LABOR 023 - LABOR IN AMERICAN SOCIETY 1.Unit  This overview of the underlying principles of American trade unionism will focus primarily on California Labor History. The text and films feature some of the most dynamic challenges from the history of working people that includes eliminating plantation slavery with a new form of industrial wage slavery in the factory system. Learn how militant industrial unionism brought  California out the Great Depression with better jobs, health care, benefits and  pension plans. Explore how race, sexuality, ethnicity and class brought social reforms that are threatened today. Pre-registration is strongly advised.

LABOR 033 - SOLVING WORKSITE PROBLEMS +1Unit
Solving problems  through  member activism is a vital class for shop stewards. Using  Issues  existing in  the workplace can provide  methods for enhancing  workers activism by  fostering rank and file mobilization, improved grievance writing, health and safety challenges  and solidarity building. Find out how you can greatly increase the power of the union at the worksite. Develop a plan for developing strengthening worker  positions and help to  level the playing field to assist in collective bargaining environments.

LABOR 030 - MEDIATION PRINCIPLES & PRACTICES+3.0 Units

Learn to conduct the mediation process and apply effective communication skills to resolve disputes. Conflicts exist everywhere in our lives. This  seminar introduces participants to the principles and processes for mediation through exercises, lively discussions, simulations, lectures and related reading materials. Participants will learn the mediation process, improve communication and negotiation skills, and other methods to help you effectively defuse disputes be they at work, school, in the home or in the community. Improve your communication skills in ways that may help enhance your life, solve problems at work or perhaps prepare for a career move.  Skilled mediators from the Santa Clara County’s Dispute Resolution Program will help you role play the important techniques and skills necessary to help people with differences come to a mutual understanding and agreement. LABOR 138 - LABOR STUDIES OCCUPATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE PARALLEL PLAN 1.0 - 8.0 Units REG #45127 BARBARA HENFLING

Corequisite: 1) Be enrolled during the regular semester in a minimum of 7 units at any accredited college, including Work Experience units or;
2)During a summer   IBEW 332 Green Energy Installers session, be enrolled in at least one other class in addition to Work Experience; and
3)Be employed or a Volunteer at an approved worksite for the minimum number of hours as stipulated for paid and  unpaid status. Each unit requires 75 paid or 60 unpaid The course provides for the development of workplace success skills.

CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE IN LABOR STUDIES
Participants who complete specific 12  Labor Studies units are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion. that  can be earned in just one year. The Associates Degrees in Arts or  Science can be earned by completing  the certificate program, the 3 Unit LS 15 Local Union and Community Leadership class, and specific  electives (see catalog and a counselor) and general education credits to total 60 Units.
