San José City College offers free noncredit classes designed to help you explore new subjects, prepare for college-level work, or build job-ready skills—all at zero cost.
Our noncredit classes provide flexible learning opportunities in ESL, short-term vocational training, and workforce preparation. These classes are designed to fit your schedule and learning style while helping you connect with experienced instructors, supportive classmates, and the broader campus community. Whether you're building career-ready skills, preparing for certificate and degree programs, or working toward better job opportunities, noncredit courses offer a powerful pathway from learning to college to career.

Steps to Enroll in noncredit classes
NEW Students: You must submit a Noncredit Application in one of two ways:
1. Create an account at CCC Apply and submit a Noncredit Application for Admission for San José City College. Once completed, make sure to keep the following information somewhere safe to refer back to:

- OpenCCC username and password
- PIN #
- CCCID #
- SJCC Confirmation #
Wait 72 hours for your application to be processed and you will receive a automated Welcome Letter with your 7-digit SJCC ID # via email. If you do not receive an automated email within 72 hours, please contact Admissions & Records with your full name, DOB, and SJCC Confirmation #.
2. Submit a paper PDF Non-Credit Application for Admission to Admissions and Records (A&R) in person or by email to sjcc.admissions@sjcc.edu.
If you are taking the intermediate to advanced noncredit ESL classes, including ESL 522, ESL 523, ESL 524, and ESL 527, you need to complete the ESL Guided Self Placement.
Submit a request to complete the ESL Guided Self Placement form here.
The other noncredit classes such as ESL 500, ESL 510, ESL 511A, ESL 511B, ESL 511C, ESL 541, ESL 542, and ESL 550, do not require the completion of the Guided Self-Placement tool.

- Contact US to find out what classes are being offered and choose what class(es) you would like to take. Scroll up to find the contact information.
- Pay attention to the start/end dates of each class, as well as the modality of instruction.
- All noncredit classes are listed in the 500-number series (for example, APE 500 and ESL 500).
Single Sign-On is an authentication method that allows students to sign in once and access all the important applications here at SJCC. Please take a moment to bookmark this page:

You will use your SSO account for the following:
- Self Service (Student Portal: allows you to register/drop classes, check grades, request transcripts, etc)
- Canvas (Classroom Portal: allows you to access your class, complete homework, tests, etc)

To register for noncredit classes, you can do it in one of two ways:
1. Self-Service - Go to Self-Service, Log In, and Search for the Class you want to register for.

We want all noncredit students to be successful!
In preparation for your first day, we recommend gathering the following information:
- Get your Class Schedule ready. Make sure you know what time your classes start and the location of each class. Check your email for any important information from your instructor.
- Log onto Canvas. You should see the class(es) you signed up for on your Canvas dashboard by the first day of class.
- Plan to arrive on time! The first day of classes can be crowded, so leave earlier than expected if you are coming to campus.
- Assess the parking situation. If driving to campus, take a look at the campus map to get familiar with SJCC! Click here for more information about parking.
- Pick up a VTA Smart Pass. Students can get a VTA Smart Pass for $6.50 per semester (5 units or less) or $11.00 per semester (6+ units). Stop by the Welcome Center in the Student Center to get a VTA Eco Pass.

San José City College is one of the members of the SBCAE that collaborate to build career pathways for adult learners to sustain better earnings while living in the one of the nation's highest cost-of-living areas. Along with dedicated faculty, staff, and community partners, SJCC is committed to helping adults with lower basic skills to join certificate programs by blending focused on skills development, and Bridge programs leading to jobs with family-sustaining wages.
Members of the SBCAE consists of the following two community college districts and
five adult school districts: San José City College, Evergreen Valley College, Mission College, West Valley College, Campbell Adult and Community Education, East Side Adult Education, Milpitas Adult Education, Santa Clara Adult Education, and Silicon Valley Career Technical Education.
Frequently asked questions (faq)
Noncredit classes are for students who want to gain general knowledge, learn a new skill, upgrade existing skills, enrich their understanding about a wide range of topics, develop personal interests and prepare for taking a credit class. Upon completion of a class, students may receive a grade of pass or no pass. Noncredit classes are NOT applicable toward a degree and will not appear on your transcript.
Credit classes are designed for students who are interested in earning college credits towards a degree or certificate. Students who take credit classes generally receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) recorded on a transcript.
California residents and undocumented residents, 18 years or older, living in California.
Students who hold F1 visas will need to connect with the San José City College International Student Programto learn the process/eligibility for enrolling into a noncredit course or program.
