  • Learning A.S.L. can give you the skills useful in a variety of careers. These skills can give you an advantage of being able to communicate with a variety of clients.

  • Some agencies offer bilingual certification or extra compensation for competency in A.S.L.

  • Students completing 3 classes can interpret at a beginning level and fully-certified interpreters are paid at a professional level.

San José City College offers the following complete, fully transferable American Sign Language program:

  • Sign Language 1A - Introduction to American Sign Language
  • Sign Language 1B - Intermediate American Sign Language
  • Sign Language 2A,B - Advanced American Sign Language
  • Sign Language 15 - Deaf Culture*
  • Sign Language 20 - Careers in Sign Language
  • Sign Language 21 - Introduction to Interpreting
  • Sign Language 98 - Directed Study

*DEAF CULTURE MAY BE OF INTEREST TO STUDENTS WHO WANT TO LEARN THE VALUES AND BELIEFS OF DEAF PEOPLE AND HOW THEY COMPARE TO OTHER CULTURAL GROUPS WITHOUT LEARNING SIGN LANGUAGE.
