History of the College

Celebrating more than seventy-five years of SJCC - circa 1960service to the residents of San José, Milpitas, and other neighboring communities, San José City College is proud to continue its tradition of excellence.

From its modest beginnings in 1921, San José City College has grown into a world-class institution enrolling about ten thousand students each semester. It serves Silicon Valley, known internationally as a center for innovation in technology and research, as well as a region whose population is growing due to the high quality of life residents enjoy in the southern San Francisco Bay Area.

For many years, San José City College operated in downtown San Jose. San Jose Unified School District began overseeing the College in 1953, moving the campus to its present Moorpark Avenue location. A decade later, an independent San Jose Junior College District was created. In 1958, the name was changed to San José City College.

The San José/Evergreen Community College District was formed in 1963. Today the District includes San Jose City College and Evergreen Valley College . The District serves 950,000 residents within its 303 square miles, encompassing the San Jose and Milpitas Unified School Districts and East Side Union High School District. Recent voter-approved general obligation bonds have funded the construction of campus buildings that allow San José City College to continue to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment. Facilities completed in 2003 include The Cesar Chavez Learning Resource Center and the landmark five-story Technology Center on the corner of Bascom and Moorpark Avenues that was completed in 2003 . The inviting Student Center, completed in 2004, is conveniently located next to a new parking garage with ample space to accommodate student needs. A new Science Building is slated for completion in 2007. Plans for the future include new facilities for Physical Education, Cosmetology, Math, Arts & Humanities, and Health Sciences.
