Middle College
Middle College is an accelerated program designed to offer a unique option to students who are academically capable. It assists students in completing high school while beginning their college careers. Selected junior and senior students take their core subjects, English and Social Studies and two additional courses with high school teachers. Students also must take a minimum of nine college units per semester. Community Service or Service Learning is also an integral part of the program. All Classes are held on the San José City Campus.
The high school program is a minimum day of 240 minutes. This time is arranged to meet the course requirements for English, Humanities, U.S. History, Government, Economics, and an elective. A college guidance course, as well as an open selection of courses from the offerings at San José City College, allows the students opportunities to explore their interests and begin college. Middle College Middle College has been recognized by the McDaniel Foundation as an innovative and highly successful program.
STUDENT PROFILE
Middle College students will be in the 11th or 12th grade. These students may be advanced, on target or behind with their credits. Some may have been told they are "not living up to their potential". Foremost, Middle College also serves those students who wish to accelerate their high school program to graduate early and to explore special interests with early college admittance.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
Students must attend classes regularly and must inform the Middle College staff when they are absent. Planning their Middle College classes with the staff and keeping a log/calendar of all assignments are essential components of the program. Students and staff follow the San José City College calendar. Students take advantage of the support services available from both the district and the college to successfully complete classes.

San José Unified School District and San José City College Relationship
Middle College students have access to the many services of both the College and the School District. The library, bookstore, Student Union, computer labs and learning center are available to Middle College students. Counseling services are available at San José City College while most of the advising is done by the San José Unified School District teachers. Credit for college course work allows Middle College students to have college work completed toward their degree.
BENEFITS TO STUDENTS
Students benefit by the opportunity to take advantage of a variety of course offerings and to learn in a flexible, open and challenging environment. In addition, students are expose to various learning modalities. They are able to develop close relationships with the Middle College teachers and their peers, as will as interact with the community college teachers and students. Middle College students develop successful traits for college work and learn to integrate work, community and academic.
