History of the College Celebrating more than seventy-five years of From its modest beginnings in 1921, San José City College has grown into a world-class institution enrolling about ten thousand students each semester. It serves Silicon Valley, known internationally as a center for innovation in technology and research, as well as a region whose population is growing due to the high quality of life residents enjoy in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. For many years, San José City College operated in downtown San Jose. San Jose Unified School District began overseeing the College in 1953, moving the campus to its present Moorpark Avenue location. A decade later, an independent San Jose Junior College District was created. In 1958, the name was changed to San José City College. The San José/Evergreen Community College District was formed in 1963. Today the District includes San Jose City College and Evergreen Valley College . The District serves 950,000 residents within its 303 square miles, encompassing the San Jose and Milpitas Unified School Districts and East Side Union High School District. Recent voter-approved general obligation bonds have funded the construction of campus buildings that allow San José City College to continue to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment. Facilities completed in 2003 include The Cesar Chavez Learning Resource Center and the landmark five-story Technology Center on the corner of Bascom and Moorpark Avenues that was completed in 2003 . The inviting Student Center, completed in 2004, is conveniently located next to a new parking garage with ample space to accommodate student needs. A new Science Building is slated for completion in 2007. Plans for the future include new facilities for Physical Education, Cosmetology, Math, Arts & Humanities, and Health Sciences. College PhilosophySan José City College is a vibrant institution of higher learning that is proud to serve a wide range of students, each with unique dreams and abilities. We are committed to helping students reach their goals. We provide a broad academic curriculum, degree and certificate programs, and innovative learning environments that promote student success. These include learning communities, service learning, peer-led workshops in Science, and the Transfer Express program that offers students convenient schedules for earning an A.A. degree in two years. Our high-demand, industry-driven programs prepare students for excellent jobs. For example, we offer state-of-the-art instruction inLaser Technology; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration; Cosmetology; Multimedia; and Computer Networking. To support students we offer many services, such as counseling, financial aid, transfer services, tutoring, , special programs such as Puente, EOP&S, a student health center, a bookstore, adaptive resources for students with special needs. Learning occurs not only in classes taught by our top-notch faculty, but also in the wealth of additional activities available to our students, such as intercollegiate athletics, clubs and student government, cultural celebrations throughout the year, and stimulating art, theater and music productions. We engage in ongoing program review to examine all aspects of our college. Our entire staff strives to create a nurturing environment that supports students’ development of skills essential for participating effectively in the dynamic society of Silicon Valley and the world beyond .
