Assessments
Success in initial college courses is an important first step in mastering
college. Assessment scores are designed to place students in the course(s)
that will best assure their initial success in college. After students take
their placement test, they will discuss their results with a counselor. In
making their final decision about course selection, students do have
the right to take a course higher than indicated by their placement test score.
Test scores are advisory only. If students think that their test results
do not reflect their true ability, they should discuss this with a counselor.
They may decide to retake the test, or choose courses based on their discussion
with the counselor. In either case, our goal is to provide students with the
best information and advice possible.
In later semesters,
if students have problems meeting basic skills prerequisites, they should
consult their college counselor. If, after consultation with the counselor,
students are not satisfied, they have the right to appeal for additional assessment
and to state their case further. The counselor will indicate the person(s)
on their campus to whom they should direct their appeal. At the end of the
appeal/assessment process, students will be expected to meet course prerequisites
but may choose to take a course higher than their basic skills level(s). If
they are still dissatisfied with their placement decisions after the appeal/assessment
process, students should feel free to contact the Dean of Counseling, an Instructional
Dean, or make use of the grievance procedures outlined in this catalog. We
must hear student concerns and meet their needs.
