LIBRARY CARD
Your SJCC Student I.D. Card, issued by the Admissions and Records office, serves   as your library card.  Students are responsible for the return of all library materials borrowed with their cards.  Fines are charged for overdue items, and payment is required for lost or damaged materials.

LIBRARY MATERIALS
In addition to books and magazines, the Library contains instructional materials in several other formats, including pamphlets, maps, college catalogs, microforms, audio cassettes, compact discs, and video cassettes.  Most library materials are listed in the library catalog.   Magazines, journals, and newspapers, in paper format, are also listed in the SJCC Library Periodicals List; copies are available in the reference area.

LOAN PERIODS
Loan periods for library materials are as follows:

  • Books, compact discs, audio cassettes-3 weeks
  • Magazines, pamphlets, maps, college catalogs-1 week
  • Video cassettes-2 days
  • Reserve materials-varies from 1 hour to 3 weeks

Borrowed items may be renewed twice, unless someone else has requested them.  Renewals may be made by telephone, call 408-288-3776, or online, at http://library.sjeccd.org/patroninfo.  Reference materials, newspapers, microforms, many reserve items, and the most recent issue of magazines are for library use only.

LIBRARY RESOURCES
Audio-Cassette Duplicator
The library staff will duplicate audio cassettes at the loan counter.  Copying is limited to instructional cassettes that involve no violation of copyright.  Students must supply their own blank cassettes.

Computers
Computers for connecting to the library catalog, online databases, and the Internet, and for word processing are located in the reference area and in rooms 1, 2, and 3 at the east end of the Library.

Disability Accommodations 
The Library is accessible to individuals with disabilities.  Room 4, at the east end of the Library, contains a video player, a scanner, a CCTV, and a computer providing text enlargement and voice output.

Information Sheets & Resource Guides 
The Library publishes a series of Information Sheets and Resource Guides, to assist students in locating and using library resources.  These publications are free and are located near the reference counter.

Media Equipment
At the east end of the Library, room 5 houses equipment for listening to compact discs, and audio cassettes.  Room 6 houses equipment for viewing videos.

Microform Readers
At the west end of the reference area are machines for reading and copying microform materials.  The price for copies is posted.

Off-Campus Resources
Items not in the SJCC Library collection may be available at local libraries or via interlibrary loan.  Ask a reference librarian for details.

Photocopy Machines
Two coin-operated photocopiers are located at the west end of the reference area.  The price for copies is posted.

Reserve Collection 
The reserve collection, located at the loan counter, contains heavily used materials that are available in a limited number of copies.  Some textbooks are in the reserve collection.  Loan periods for reserve materials vary.

Web Site
The Library's Web site provides a wealth of information, including online databases, links to other sites, plus useful information on using the World Wide Web for academic research.

LIBRARY COURSES
Library Studies 011 is a one unit, independent-study course on how to identify, locate and use basic library resources.

Library Studies 022 is a one unit, online course on how to use the Internet to access information useful for academic research.

Library Studies 15 is a three unit, online course covering more advanced Internet search strategies and the evaluation of academic content.

All courses are transferable.  For more information, consult a counselor or a librarian.

REFERENCE SERVICES
The reference counter is located directly facing the turnstiles as you enter the Library.   If you need help locating information or using library resources, be sure to ask the reference librarian for assistance.
