What is assessment?

Assessment is testing designed to help you determine your skill level in many academic areas including reading, writing, ESL, and mathematics. The results from your test will assist you and the Counselors in determining the appropriate courses for you to enroll in during your first semester.

You may hear your scores referred to as “Assessment Scores” or “Placement Scores.” Either way, they are just a way to help determine which classes are the best for you to start with here at San Jose City College

San Jose City College uses COMPASS, a computerized assessment for placement into English, Reading, Math and ESL courses. Assessment appointments are only open to students who have submitted their application and intend to enroll at San Jose City College.

Please explore our website further for more information on how to prepare for your Assessment, scheduling appointments and who should take our English, Math and/or ESL assessment.

Cell phones, MP3 players or any other wireless devices are not allowed in the testing room. -
