Mission Statement
The Mission of the Disabled Students Program and Services is to provide specialized support services and instruction which allow students with disabilities to fully access and benefit from the general offerings and services of San Jose City College.
Students with disabilities who receive specialized support are persons with exceptional needs enrolled at the San Jose City College because of a verified disability. These students cannot fully benefit from the general education classes, activities, and services without specific additional accommodations, specialized services and/or educational programs.The services provided to disabled students fall into five major categories:

Counseling/advising/planning, including an initial intake interview and follow-up later in the semester and for each semester thereafter as long as the student is enrolled;

disability-related assessment;
-
registration assistance;
-
instructional assistance, including tutoring, note taker services, reader services, transcription services, interpreters, test taking facilitation and tape recorders.
Student Responsibilities
Students with disabilities are responsible for informing the Disabled Students Program and Services (DSP/S) office of disabilities that require accommodations in their educational process. Students with disabilities must first contact the DSP/S office to make an appointment with a Disabled Students Program counselor to assess the nature of the disability and accommodations. The student will be require to provide verification of disability. After providing documentation of the disability that requires an academic adjustment or accommodation, the student will consult with one of the Disabled Students Program counselors about registering with the DSP/S program.
Students with disabilities must maintain the same responsibility for their education as other students. These responsibilities include maintaining the academic integrity of courses and behaving appropriately in the classroom as well as on campus.
Student Responsibilities Checklist:
- To provide DSP/S documentation of disability.
- To request accommodations and access to college classes, programs, activities, services, and facilities in a timely manner.
- To use accommodations appropriately.
- To inform instructor of accommodation needs.
- To notify DSP/S office at least 24 hours in advance for planned absences from classes where services are being provided, i.e. interpreters, readers. Failure to do so may result in discontinuance of services.
- To report need for facilities access.
- To follow through with counseling, assessment, or placement test appointments. Failure to keep these appointments may result in discontinuance of DSP/S services.
