Guidelines for Faculty

  1. Consult with Service Learning Coordinator, Ronald Levesque, ronald.levesque@sjcc.edu
    • His office hours for service learning are in the Service Learning Office, SC-216H, and in the adjoining Job Placement Center in the Student Center, 2-4 on Monday/Wednesday,12-2 on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
    • Pat Greene , the Placement Officer, can also assist you and your students throughout the day in the Job Placement Center, 10am to 6:30pm, Monday through Thursday.
    • N.B. The Job Placement Center is closed for lunch from 2 to 3 Monday through Thursday.
    • Sarah Cable , Project SHINE Coordinator, will assist students in Project SHINE in SC-216H throughout the day when she is not at community sites. Her hours are posted near the door.
  1. Read descriptions of agency sites in the Job Placement Center or at our website at www.sjcc.edu/slp for appropriate service learning opportunities for your course.
    • Visit community agencies and meet the staff if you think that will be useful.
  1. Decide what types of service will enhance the learning of one or more of your academic course objectives. The service project should be an integral part of the academic curriculum.
  1. Design your course syllabus (green sheet) to reflect the service learning component, or write up a separate handout to distribute later. Consider these issues:
    • Is the service required or optional?
    • What type of service placements are acceptable?
    • What length of commitment is required?
    • How will the service learning experience relate to the course objectives and activities?
    • How will a grade be given for service learning?
  1. Explain the service learning project to your class.
    • Consider showing a 10-minute video, “Building Community,” available for check out in the Service Learning Office.
    • Have Ron Levesque make a presentation on the Service Learning Program to your class.
    • Have Sarah Cable make a presentation on Project SHINE

  1. Have interested students check in at the Job Placement Center, or download forms and information from the college website. (The URL is given above.)
    • Students should first read a sheet titled, “Guidelines for Students.”
    • Students can read descriptions of agencies collected in a binder in the office.
    • Those interested need to complete an application form and sign the “Assumption of Risk” form, and then turn them in to the Service Learning Coordinator.
    • Upon completion of the sign-up process, students will receive a pass card, the “Agreement with Site Supervisor,” and “Record of Service Hours” to take to the agency
    • The Service Learning Coordinator will contact students by phone or email before they visit certain sites that screen; most often, students go directly to a community site after making an appointment.
    • At the agency, the students will hand over the pass card and complete the service learning agreement with the onsite volunteer coordinator.
  1. Students will provide a copy of the “Agreement with Site Supervisor” to you for your approval.
    • Make certain the service activities satisfy the objectives of your course.
    • Help students to write out their expected learning outcomes on the agreement form.
    • Ensure that students serve their hours according to the particular requirements of a site.
    • Sign and date the service agreement once it meets your satisfaction, and have the student give a copy to you, the site coordinator, and the Service Learning Coordinator, and keep one for himself or herself. N.B. The office needs its copy at the start of the service project.

  1. Structure formal reflection/analytical assignments that allow students to integrate their service learning experiences with their formal course of studies, for example, journals, group discussions, and class presentations.
  1. Provide ongoing support to students while the service is being carried out, such as opportunities for them to discuss their experiences with classmates.
  1. Have students verify their hours of service by turning in the Record of Service Hours form to the program office.
  1. Hand out and collect student final evaluations of their service learning project.
    • Share these with the Service Learning Coordinator.
    • Modify a service learning project as needed for next semester.
  1. Award a Certificate of Commendation to each student who has served 10 or more hours.
  1. Evaluate the Service Learning Program by filling out the form and turning it in at the end of the term.
