Guidelines for Students

  1. Understand exactly what your instructor has assigned as a service learning project.

  2. Consult with the Service Learning Coordinator, Ronald Levesque, ronald.levesque@sjcc.edu.
  • His office hours are in the Student Learning Office, SC-216H, and in the adjoining Job Placement Center in the Student Center, 2 - 4 on Monday/Wednesday and 12 - 2 on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

  • The Job Placement Center is open from 10 to 6:30 Monday through Thursday, and the Placement Officer, Pat Greene, can assist you as well. N.B. The Center is usually closed for an hour between 2 and 3 for lunch, Monday through Thursday.
  • Sarah Cable , Project SHINE Coordinator, can assist you if you sign up for Project SHINE. She is in SC-216H throughout the day when she is not at community sites. Her hours are posted near the door.
  1. Read descriptions of agency sites (in binders) for appropriate service learning opportunities for your course. Take a copy of the ones that interest you. You may also download descriptions from our website www.sjcc.edu/slp.
  2. Decide what types of service will enhance the learning of your academic course objectives. Your service project should be an integral part of the academic curriculum.
  3. If you are interested, you first need to complete an application form and sign the “Assumption of Risk” form, and then turn them in to the Service Learning Coordinator. If he is not there, put your forms in his inbox or give them to the Placement Officer. Forms downloaded from the website must be turned in at the program office. Upon completion of these forms, you will receive a pass card, an ‘Agreement with Site Supervisor’ form, and a ‘Record of Service Hours’ form to take to the agency
  4. For certain agencies, you may then go to the site directly (but always phone them first). For others, Mr. Levesque will contact you by phone or through your instructor before you visit the site for the first time. Some sites want to screen applicants.
  5. At the agency, you will hand over the pass card and complete the service learning agreement with the onsite volunteer coordinator
    • This will spell out your volunteer duties and responsibilities and your schedule.

  1. You will provide a copy of the service learning agreement to your instructor, to theService Learning Coordinator, and to the onsite volunteer coordinator before you begin your project.
    • Make certain the service activities satisfy the objectives of your course as well as adhere to the instructions of your instructor. Your instructor must approve the agreement before you can give it to each party

  1. Assume responsibility for your attendance at your agency according to the agreement. If you are ever absent, notify your onsite coordinator. Make up the missed time when you can. Each visit there, have your site supervisor verify your hours by signing the Record of Service Hours form.
  1. Be ready to share your experiences with your instructor and classmates in the form of journals, group discussions, class presentations, or written assignments.
  1. Turn in your Record of Service Hours at the Service Learning Office when you end your project . For ten or more verified hours of service, you will receive a Certificate of Commendation.
  1. Complete an evaluation (from your instructor) of your service learning experience.
