Your nine-digit Social Security number remains your first and continuous link with Social Security. It helps the U.S. accurately record your covered wages. If you already have a Social Security Number, you will not need to apply for another as this number is assigned for life.
You need a Social Security number to get a job. F-1 students are only eligible for Social Security Number if they have a job offer and if they are allowed to work On-Campus or through CPT or OPT. Do not carry your card with you. Keep it in a safe place with your other important papers.
To apply for a Social Security Card, you need the following documents:
Letter from employer confirming the job offer (off-campus)
Letter of support from the International Student Center
Most recent I-20
SJCC Student ID card
Social Security Card Application
Social Security Administration must verify your documents with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) before your number is assigned. This process can take up to 2 to 3 weeks.
