MUWEKMA OHLONE ANCESTRAL LAND

We recognize that every member of the San José community has, and continues to benefit from, the use and occupation of this land since the institution's founding in 1921.

Consistent with our values of community, inclusion, and diversity, we have a responsibility to acknowledge and make visible the college's relationship to the original people.

As members of the community, it is vitally important that we recognize the history of the land on which we stand. We also recognize that the Muwekma Ohlone people are alive and flourishing members of the broader Bay Area.

We acknowledge that the land on which we gather at San José City College sits on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Muwekma Ohlone, who are the original peoples of the San Francisco Bay Area.

We recognize that we benefit from living, working, and learning on their traditional homeland, and we affirm their sovereign rights as first peoples.

San José City College History

San José City College is one of the oldest community colleges in California. SJCC has delivered its educational mission with integrity and vitality, growing into a world-class institution serving approximately ten thousand students each semester.

In 1986 the San José City College District was renamed the San José/Evergreen Community College District to incorporate the naming of our sister college Evergreen Valley College which opened in 1975.

In 1999, 2004, and 2010 voters within the San José/Evergreen Community College District passed bond measures to help rebuild the campus and provide modern technology and facilities for the students at San José City College.

Some of the buildings completed as part of these bond proceeds are the César Chávez Library, Robert N. Chang Student Center, Science Complex, Parking Garage, Career Technology Building, Technology Center, Multi-Disciplinary Building, Carmen N. Castellano Fine Arts Center, Jaguar Sports Complex, and the significant renovations of the Business, Cosmetology, and Reprographics buildings.

Located in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, the college offers all the benefits of being in the middle of the world’s hub of technological innovation and entrepreneurship. San José City College currently serves the Milpitas, San José, and other surrounding communities and serves approximately 10,000 students per semester.
