New International F-1 Students 

"I am applying to San Jose City College from outside the U.S. and will apply for an F-1 student visa."

    1. International Student Application(link)  (Complete and submit.)
    2. Official English detailed translations of all your secondary and post-secondary transcripts. We recommend using an accredited translation agency. 
    3. English Language Proficiency Requirement: 
    a) By Examination: Scores must be sent directly by testing agency
          • TOEFL School Code: 4686 Dept Code: 00, Minimum Score: 500 paper-based; 61 iBT.

          • IELTS Academic Module Minimum Band Score: 5.5.

          • STEP-EIKEN Minimum Score: Step 2A.

          • PTE  Academic Test Minimum Score:  42

          • Duolingo Minimum Overall Score: 90

    b) Completion of the prerequisite course for college level English at  U.S. institution.

    c) By Participation in Partner English Language Program

    4. Original Bank Certification Letter indicating required funds in USD (For 2022 - 2023 year, minimum $23,300 USD required). 

    5. Financial Certification Form (found in Section 8 of the online application)

    6. Passport Biographical Page or Passport-Size Photo.

    7. International Dependent Form (if applicable).

    Complete applications (items 1-6) will be reviewed by the International Program admissions team. Admission decisions will be emailed within two weeks during non-peak times of the year. Admitted students will receive a letter of acceptance, form I-20, and other admission information.


F-1 Transfer Students

"I am currently studying on a F-1 visa and I am planning to transfer to SJCC from another U.S. college, high school or language program."

    F-1 Transfer students must be in good academic (2.0 GPA or higher) and good immigration standing (non-terminated SEVIS record) at the previous school attended. If you are transferring from another school in the U.S. and already have an F-1 visa, you must complete the SEVIS Transfer Release Form provided in your admissions packet to transfer to our college. 

  1. Follow the procedure above for New Students. 
  2. In addition, submit a copy of current Form I-20, F1 visa, passport biographical information page, and  I-94 card. You can access your I-94 information on the official website. 

  3. Submit a Statement of Purpose explaining why you wish to transfer SJCC and how it will help you achieve your educational and professional goals.
  4. Submit the SEVIS Transfer Release Form to your current insitution.
    • Your SEVIS record must be transferred within 60 days of the program end date at your previous school and at least 15 days before the start date of your program at SJCC. If you plan to travel outside of the U.S. before beginning your program at SJCC, please contact us to obtain an I-20 for re-entry purposes. Do not use your previous school’s I-20 to re-enter the U.S. 
    Upon receipt of a complete application, the international admissions staff will review it. Admission decisions will be mailed within 2 weeks. Transfer students must be in good academic and immigration standing at the previous school attended.

Concurrent Enrollment for F-1 Students

“I am currently studying as an F-1 student at another U.S. college and plan to study at San Jose City College part-time under concurrent enrollment status."

  1. Go to CCCApply and submit an application. Take note of your confirmation number. 
  2. Obtain a permission letter from your current school’s International Program allowing you to take one or two courses at SJCC. 
  3. Email permission letter and confirmation number from CCCApply (or SJCC student id number) to the Office of Admissions & Records at San Jose City College to obtain a student ID number at sjcc.admissions@sjcc.edu.
  4. If you are registering for a class that has a prerequisite, complete this form: Prerequisite Clearance Form

*We may accept applications after the stated deadline on a case-by-case basis from F-1 Transfer students and students who will start at a Partner English Language Program.

All applications submitted from students applying from outside the U.S. after the stated deadline will moved to the following semester.

Applications submitted between November 16 - February 14 will be reviewed on an emergency basis only. Please contact the ISP office directly if you believe you qualify.

Important F-1 visa dates

F-1 Visa Interviews
F-1 Earliest Arrival Date

Visa interviews are only conducted starting 120 days prior to the program start date listed on your I-20 and until the start of the semester. 

Students with approved F-1 visas may arrive in the U.S. no earlier than 30 days prior to the program start date listed on your I-20 and until the start of the semester.

Fall Semester:
Approximately from May 1st until end of August.

Fall Semester:
Approximately from August 1st until the start of the semester.


Spring Semester:
Approximately from October 1st until the end of January.
Spring Semester:
Approximately from January 1st until the start of the semester.
