Student Debt*

All students who had past or current debt dating back to calendar year 2008 to the present year were sent letters notifying them of their outstanding financial balance with San José City College regardless of the dollar amount. Letters were sent to the personal e-mail address on-file with San José City College.

Yes, students can make payments in-person by visiting the San José City College Business Services Office located the Admissions & Records Office located on the first floor of the Robert N. Chang Student Center.

Students will be asked to provide their Social Security number or will be asked for other identifying information to confirm identification to adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

San José City College plans to send three letters and the San Jose Evergreen Community College District Office plans to send one letter to students with outstanding financial balances.

Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA), California Dream Act Application (CADAA), or California College Promise Grant (CCPG) application.

After receiving a total of four written notifications, students with outstanding financial balances will be sent to collections.

San José City College will be participating in the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Tax Offset Program (COTOP).

Fees will be garnished from students who are owed a California state issued refund upon filing for California state taxes or from lottery winnings.

No, student’s credit scores will not be affected.

Since calendar year 2008 to the present year, San José City College has accrued approximately $11 million in student debt due to the nonpayment of enrollment fees, tuition, and other student fees.

Payment Plans*

Yes, former and current students can enter into payment plans to help pay off past or current debt.

Students must contact or visit the San José City College Business Services Office to enter into payment plans.  The San José City College Business Services Office may be reached by calling (408) 288-3768, emailing sjccbalance@sjcc.edu, or visiting the Admissions & Records Office located on the first floor of the Robert N. Chang Student Center.

Students must be at 10% of the dollar amount owed per the semester/term in which they are entering into a payment plan.

No, students with outstanding financial balances will be prevented from course registration for subsequent terms.  Payment plans are only pertinent to the term in which payment plans address.

Students who are unable to fulfill the conditions of their payment plan will have a course registration hold placed on their educational record preventing course registration in subsequent terms and may be sent to collections.

Course Registration Holds*

San José City College will be implementing course registration holds effective for intersession and spring 2024 for students with outstanding financial balances.

A course registration hold prevents students from registering for courses for the subsequent terms.  Course registration holds placed by San José City College will also apply to Evergreen Valley College.

Students must make payment in full for outstanding financial balances.  Students can make payments online via Self-Service (formerly known as MyWeb) in-person by visiting the San José City College Business Services Office located the Admissions & Records Office located on the first floor of the Robert N. Chang Student Center.

The San José City College Business Services Office can remove course registration holds for students.

International Students Only

Yes, continuing international students from spring 2023 to fall 2023 should have received $800 in financial assistance in response to the increase to nonresident tuition for the 2023-2024 Academic Year.

Continuing international students will receive their first financial assistance disbursement during the month of September 2023.  The second financial assistance disbursement is scheduled for February 2024.

Continuing international students will receive their financial assistance via BankMobile, the third-party vendor that the college uses for the disbursement of financial aid.

Yes, continuing who owe funds to the college will have their financial assistance reduced to pay for fees owed.

Yes, continuing international students who plan to continue their enrollment from spring 2023 to fall 2023 to spring 2024 will be eligible for a second $800 disbursement in financial assistance in spring 2024.

No, new international students are not eligible to receive financial assistance.

Fall 2023 will be the last semester in which international students will be able to enter into payment plan at San José City College.  After fall 2023, international students will not able to enter into payment plans for future terms.

Effective intersession and spring 2024, international students will be required to make payment at time of course registration.

This practice is in accordance with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, San José City College catalog, and San José Evergreen Community College District Administrative Procedure 5010 – Admissions; and Administrative Procedure 5012 – International Students.

International students must have sufficient funds available for self-support during the entire proposed course of study.

The San José City College catalog states, “International students are required to pay the non-resident tuition, enrollment, capital outlay, international health insurance, transportation, and campus health fees at time of registration.”
